Helen Rose Millett Kreeger, 92, long time resident of Salinas, passed away Friday, June 18, 2010, in Salinas surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 15, 1918, in Omaha, Nebraska.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Walter, sister, Betty, and granddaughter, Janel.
Helen is survived by her husband of 72 years, Leroy Kreeger, daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Roger Patterson; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Kathy Kreeger; daughter and son-in-law, Teri and Gordon Babbitt all of Salinas, and daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Bob Barnes of Sacramento; grandchildren, Joleen, Robert, Benjamin, and Kimberly; great-grandchildren, Jennie, Chelsea, Marcelene, Jess, Garrett, Aubrey-Lynne, Landen, Tyler, and Aidan; great-great-grandchildren, Alexus, Cayden, and Lanae. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She is also loved by several foster grandchildren: Eddie Yanez, Noel Voisin, Martha Ramirez, America Ramos, Jose Medriano, Santiago Gonzales, and Tony Gonzales.
Helen graduated with honors from South High School in 1935. She married her childhood sweetheart, Leroy, on September 25, 1937 when she was 19 and he was 20. Roy brags that he has loved her since he was 10 years old, making them sweethearts for 82 years. They lived in Omaha, NE.; Chicago, IL, where their two daughters Beverly and Patricia were born; and Milwaukee, WI. where their son Larry was born. In 1955, they moved to Salinas so that Roy could pursue a career as a produce broker. Their daughter, Teri, was born in 1962.
Helen lived a very active life with her family and friends. Her passion was her family and her Lord and Savior. She was a godly woman and role model on how to live a Christ-honoring life as a wife, mother, and friend. She faithfully served in her church, Grace Community, teaching many Sunday School classes and Women's Bible studies. She also taught release time Bible classes which was an outreach program for children in the community.
She was very supportive of her husband as he pursued a variety of careers including pastoring, teaching, real estate, and business. When Roy chose to pursue a career in the real estate industry, Helen decided to get her license as well so that she could keep him company as he traveled back and forth to San Jose. Through their endeavors in real estate, they acquired Hap's Drive-in which later became Roy's Drive-in, an icon in North Salinas for over 40 years. That acquisition became the start of a chain of Roy's Drive-ins in Watsonville, Santa Cruz and a chicken restaurant in Salinas.
Helen enjoyed being a stay at home mom where she excelled in the gifts of homemaking such as cooking, sewing, gardening, and hospitality. She loved people and always made them feel loved by her acts of kindness. She and Roy enjoyed traveling all over the world enjoying God's creation. Her favorite activity was going camping with the whole family. She made a lasting impact on everyone she met.
We are happy that she is in heaven with her Lord and Savior but we will miss her physical presence. We do not have to grieve as those without hope, because we know that one day we will all be reunited with her in heaven.
