February 6, 1949 - June 12, 2018
Born in Chicago, Illinois
Resided in Salinas, CA
He was an engineer, following in the footsteps of his prior generations. His love of all things mechanical and the outdoors led him to many things. He was a runner, a cyclist, a river runner, and a musician. He was a track star in school and followed that avocation into adulthood. He raced bicycles, rode mountain bikes, and cycled across the United States. His river skills were top-notch, taking him canoeing and rafting through many rivers east and west, including the Grand Canyon. He developed his musical ability into a skill that he was highly proud of.
Bill worked for 33 years as an engineer and scientist in civilian capacity for various branches of the U.S. military. He retired from the U.S. Navy as an instructor based at the Naval Post Graduate School.
In retirement years, he followed his passion for music by playing and making finely crafted ukuleles. His accomplishments were appreciated by those who knew him, and his talents were professionally acknowledged by the Guild of American Luthiers.
Bill is survived by Cathy, his wife of 31 years, and by his son Jason whom he adored. Also surviving is his mother Margret West, his uncle Chuck West, his brother Dave (Betty) West, and his sister Kate (Doug) Spencer. He leaves an ache in the hearts of the entire Stein Family, as well as with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A tribute to Bill’s life will follow a later date.
