He attended Salinas High School, Hartnell College, Colorado State and earned a degree in Crop Science from Cal Poly. Bob began working at Leighton Seed Company with his dad after college, where he eventually took over the family business with his partner, Dave Silacci. More recently, he found his way to his lifelong passion in viticulture. He developed a vineyard, affectionately named Vista de Los Padres in memory of his dad. Bob continued to be involved in agriculture until his passing.
Bob was preceded in death by his mother and father, Frances Joanne Cook (Gran) and Robert (Papa San) Leighton.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Janet Fergusson Leighton; his amazing sons, Nicholas Robert Leighton, Matthew Austin Leighton, Robert Bruce Leighton; his sisters, Robin Slocum (Paul), Sheri Leighton. Bob is also survived by his mother in law, Carroll Fergusson (Nana), relatives; Mary (Ken), Brian (Kate), Shelly (Mike), Andie (Donald), Joey (Crystal), Anthony, Miles, Mason, Matthew, Lacey, Jordan, Reagan, Charlee and many cousins for whom he cared deeply.
Bob belonged to numerous organizations. He was actively involved with the Salinas Valley Ramblers; the Native Sons of the Golden West; the Cal Poly Penguins; the Moose Lodge; the Monterey County Junior Livestock Auction; and the Monterey County Heritage Foundation. He volunteered in numerous capacities in youth sports and other charities and was always there to lend a hand when needed.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Salinas Valley Community Church, 368 San Juan Grade Road, Salinas, CA 93906.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salinas High School Booster Club, 1172 S. Main Street #340, Salinas, CA. 93901 or Native Sons of the Golden West
