Obituary

Calistro Avila Martinez, 92, of Castroville, passed away peacefully at the Post-Acute nursing home in Watsonville the morning of April 6, 2017. His family was by his bedside throughout his illness surrounding him with love and prayers.

Tata, as called by his children, was the father of nine and husband of Petra Martinez for 62 years. Most important to him were his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved his children in his own way and they know he made nameless and countless sacrifices for them. He will be remembered for his gifted story-telling abilities, with a quick wit and playful sense of humor. Calistro and Petra created a home together full of warm greetings, generous spirit, and delicious food where everyone was made welcome.

Calistro was born on October 14, 1924 in Picacho, New Mexico. He was the son of Mexican immigrants recruited to the United States to build railroads connecting Chicago to California during World War I. Calistro was a proud veteran of World War II where he served as a Seaman First Class on the USS Hammondsport supplying the Pacific Fleet. Like his father, he also worked to build railroads and worked at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico and Fort Ord Military Base in Seaside, CA.

After marrying and living many years in El Paso, Texas, Calistro and Petra packed up their nine children and moved to Castroville, California. He was a devout Catholic and long-standing parishioner of Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church, where he served as an usher and volunteered in different capacities.

Calistro was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Petra, three of his sons, George, Mike, and Frank and three grandchildren, Ralf, Panchito, and Ruben.

He is survived by three sons, Daniel, Gilbert, and Alfredo; three daughters, Mariaelena, Elsa and Lilly. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren who will also miss him greatly.
