Tannie married Jan Mandel her high school sweetheart in 1952. They lived in Wisconsin, and Alaska before settling in Salinas in 1958.
She graduated from Illinois State Normal University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in teaching. Tannie taught school for 39 years before her retirement. Most of her teaching career was in the Salinas City School District where she enriched the lives of many Salinas children especially sharing her experiences in Russia during the summer of l959. Tannie worked for the Whirlpool Company and demonstrated their equipment at the Russian Exposition. Tannie also taught school in Illinois, Wisconsin and Alaska. It was in Alaska that she learned to fly a single engine Cessna airplane.
In retirement Tannie enjoyed golfing, shopping and numerous camping trips in Oregon.
Tannie was a member of AAUW and currently belonged to Forever Friends, PEO and a Bunko group.
She is survived by her husband, Jan Mandel of 64 years, sister, Dorothy Griffin, Nephews, Todd and Raymond Griffin and Great Nephew Steven Griffin and Great Nieces, Kelli and Jennifer Griffin.
Arrangements for private burial have been made by Struve and Laporte and A Celebration of Life for Family and Friends will be 2:00p.m. to 4:00p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Corral de Tierra Country Club, 81 Corral de Tierra Road, Salinas, CA. 93908.
