October 28, 1930 - March 7, 2018
Born in Sarles, North Dakota
Resided in Salinas, California
While raising her family in Fort Wayne, Winnie had a career as an interior decorator. She decorated each house the family lived in, including a 100-year-old farmhouse. She also wrote for the local paper, was active in politics and her local church. The family moved from Fort Wayne to Minneapolis, MN and later settled in CA. While in southern CA, she volunteered at the Leonis Adobe and in northern CA she volunteered at the Historical Society in Kelly Park. Winnie worked for over 25 years at Ethan Allen, both in Los Angeles and in San Jose, CA. She loved collecting eggs, and received an egg instead of a gold watch when she retired to help care for Dominic. Winnie was always busy, either with her family, making fudge, going to museums, antique hunting, collecting eggs or reading, but she said her favorite job was raising her family. She could tell a tall tale, but could never quite get the punch line right for telling a joke!
Winnie is survived by 2 of her sisters, Doris and Evelyn, her 7 children, 15 grandchildren, 15 great grand-children and 1 more on the way, as well as many nieces and nephews. We thank the staff at Madonna Manor for their help as Winnie went from independent to dependent living over the many years she lived there, and special thanks to Meg, Meg’s daughters, and dear friends Bev & Dana for always taking such good care of Winnie. The family will plan for a future celebration of her life. Donations can be made to your favorite charity.
