William L. Tabacchi, 87, passed away "PEACEFULLY AT HOME" on Sunday December 31, 2017. He was born on February 26, 1930 in Salinas, California.

He grew up on a ranch on River Road in the Gonzales area, went to Somavia Grammer School and Gonzales High School. He served in the Army, taking basic training at Fort Ord in 1951. Served with 2nd division 23rd infantry regiment in Korea where he was wounded in action in 1952 he was awarded the purple heart medal.

He was a member of post 0589, American Legion and also was a member of VFW (Veterans of foreign wars). He was honorably discharged on December 28, 1952. He also was a member of the Monterey County Swiss American Club. He worked at the Salinas Californian Newspaper for over 43 yrs in the composing room as a composter (printer) retiring December 31, 1996.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Tabacchi and Romina Tabacchi, and his brother, Elmer.

He is survived by his nephew, Michael Tabacchi and niece Tami Tabacchi. In 2007.

He went to visit Switzerland, the birthplace of his parents. William was very proud of his Swiss heritage and wanted to see where his parents were born and lived. His father was from Fusio, Valmaggia, and his mother was from Chironico, Val Leventina. He also visited cousins in different parts of Switzerland and enjoyed meeting them in person for the first time. He also went to Paris and visited the Normandy Coast in France, where the allies landed on D-day, June 6, 1944, during World War II.

At his request no funeral service will be held.
