Born in Colleton County, South Carolina
Resided in Seaside, California
Thomesena Cochran Lanier was born December 5, 1921 in Round O, Colleton County, South Carolina, to the union of Allen Cochran and Annie Holmes. Her mother Annie died at the early age of 37. After the death of their mother, Thomesena and her sister lived with their grandparents for the next 3 years. They eventually moved to Jacksonville, Florida to live with their father.
Years later Thomesena met James Jerome Lanier. who was serving in the U.S. Army and stationed at Camp Blanding, Florida at the time. The couple united in marriage in 1944 and James was then reassigned to Petersburg, Virginia. After a short stay in Petersburg, James was deployed to Japan for two years and eventually stationed at Fort Ord, California where Thomesena and the kids joined him. Thomesena and James decided to stay in California because they loved the weather. Five children were born from their union.
MET A GOOD FRIEND
“MET A GOOD FRIEND”, “BEST FRIEND EVER”…..Thomasena found Jesus Christ and met some good church people and for that she would often say, ”PRAISE GOD”! In 1955 Thomesena accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior. “OH WHAT A JOY” it was to work with God’s people. She was born again at Victory Temple Church of God in Christ where she shined as a faith-filled servant of the Lord.
Mother Lanier served the Lord and her church in various capacities: Usher, Deaconess, Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, Woman’s Day President, Mother’s Board Member, CHURCH MOTHER, Monterey District Mother’s Board, Monterey District Mother’s Board President and FAITHFUL PRAYER WARRIOR.
Her love for God and people were the hallmark of her character as well as her delicious sweet potato pies. She has earned the love, respect and devotion of many who have been fortunate enough to call her MOM.
