Sachi Kawahira of Salinas, California passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and good friends on July 28, 2017 at the age of 84--just shy of her 85th birthday--in Stanford, California from complications of an e. coli infection. Born in Kushikino, Japan, she immigrated to the United States after her marriage to Hideo Kawahira in 1957.

In Japan, she worked at an immigration office helping people to emigrate to the United States. Her early years in the United States were spent as a homemaker, then as a seamstress in Los Angeles. She embraced the American way of life and within a decade became a naturalized citizen. After the family moved to Salinas in the late 60s, she diligently worked side-by-side with her husband Hideo in the flower farm business for over 40 years.

Sachi was an active and dedicated member in numerous organizations, including those in the Buddhist and Japanese-American communities: Salinas Buddhist Temple, Nansatsu Doshikai, and the Nikkei Kokusai Kekon Tomonokai. She loved life and lived it to the fullest. Always curious, her interests varied from cooking traditional Japanese food to trying new dishes like the Mexican recipes shared with her by employees, folk dancing, singing, ikebana (flower arranging), world travel for business, temple and pleasure. Even after retirement she remained active, taking up new interests in poetry (Sowan Senryu Ginsha), and continued involvement in the international Buddhist women's community and annual meet-ups with Japanese-American wives of foreign wars. She loved connecting with people through selling Amway products and Senka gifts for relatives in Japan. She kept lifelong friendships with her classmates in Japan, attending every reunion in recent years. She was known as a strong-willed, kind and generous woman to both friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Hideo Kawahira; brothers, Hiromi and Mitsuho Nishizono, and her parents Ukichi and Teru Nishizono of Japan.

Sachi is survived by her daughters, Mary of San Francisco and Grace of Mountain View; her sister, Yoshiko and brother, Takashi--both of Japan; cousins, Akira Nishizono (Gloria) of Salinas, Taira Nishizono (Tsuneko) of Japan, as well as her nephew Syuichi and nieces Junko, Tomoko, Mie, Eiko, Midori, and Yoko--all of Japan; nieces Kary and Shirley and nephews Ray and David--all of the Los Angeles area.

Sachi was taken from us unexpectedly and much too soon. We will miss her amazing spirit to live immensely.

Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Salinas Buddhist Temple, 14 California St., Salinas, CA.

An additional Memorial service will be held at the Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple in Los Angeles on Sunday, August 20, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. The Burial service will be held Monday, August 21, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Inglewood Park Cemetery
