While living in New Hampshire, he competed and went on to place in the Junior Novice pairs at Northeastern sectionals. He continued to skate through college and medical school. As an adult he won a gold medal in the Adult Senior Pairs figure skating competition with his partner Sydney Thatcher. He also won a gold medal in single men’s competition. Unable to continue skating due to a back injury he pursued a career as an ice skating judge in addition to the practice of medicine. He quickly climbed the judging ranks and became a U.S. national and international judge and was named the first judge for the Puerto Rican Figure Skating Federation. Prior to his death, he was only able to judge one Puerto Rican National competition. Later this January he was scheduled to attend the 2007 State Farm U.S. National Championship as part of the medical team.
He is survived by his beloved life partner of 12 years David Lewis, his parents Ruben Sr. and Mary Montes, and his sister Marisa Montes.
