Obituary

Robert (Bob) Maness Bohn, 69 of Salinas, CA. passed away suddenly on May 15, 2009. Bob was born September 13, 1939 in Cheyenne, WY to Dr. Guy W. Bohn and Mrs. Lorene D. Bohn. They moved to the San Diego area in 1946 and he graduated from La Jolla HS in 1957 where he was a member of the ROTC, played clarinet in the band, and was on the football team.

After high school he earned his bachelors degree in Botany from San Diego State University where he met and married his wife Karen E. Bohn. He joined the United States Army where he served in Germany and Dugway, UT from 1962 to 1965.

After leaving the Army, he earned his second bachelors degree in Plant Pathology from UC Davis. Upon graduation, he moved to Salinas and worked as a research scientist for UC Ag Extension from 1968 to 1973. He then moved on to Ferry Morris Seed Co in Hollister and worked for them from 1973 to 1980. He worked for the Monterey County Agricultural Commissioner's office from 1982 until retiring in 2004

He and Karen were foster parents for teenage girls in the 1970s and 80s. During the 1990s, they hosted AFS students. They were known by many a teenager as their "second parents". Bob had a welcoming gentle nature to him that drew people, especially teenagers and young adults, to seek him out for advice and mentoring. He is still seen today as a shaping force in many of their lives.

He was a dedicated member of Northminster Presbyterian Church where he was Head Deacon, an Elder, sang in multiple choirs, and played in the bell choir. He was a member of the Salinas Valley Model Railroad Club and loved working with model trains. He also enjoyed fishing, bowling, and playing golf.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his grandson Weston David Bohn.

He is survived by his wife Karen E. Bohn of Salinas, daughter Lorene Johnson of Pflugerville, TX, son Robert W. Bohn of Monterey, brother John F. Bohn of San Diego, grandchildren Jacob Bohn, Sky Johnson, and Shyanne Johnson, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
