Bob was born August 4, 1954 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Robert E. and Emily Barber joining his older brother Ed to complete their family. The family travelled throughout Bob’s childhood in the United States and Taiwan due to his father’s career in the military and civil service. When the family settled in Salinas, Bob graduated from North Salinas High School.
After high school, Bob worked in the automotive industry for several years. He then worked as a courier for local banks for over 25 years. Bob started his own courier company, Specialized Courier, in 2011 and continued to support the banking industry.
Bob’s adventurous spirit lead him in many endeavors. He earned his private pilot’s license. He became a certified scuba diver, enjoying dives off of the central coast and Mexico. Bob trained and competed in many running and biking events including the Big Sur Marathon, Portland Oregon Marathon, Wildflower Triathlon, the Seagate Triathlon in Pacific Grove, and the St. Croix Triathlon.
As a board member and volunteer for Victory Mission, Bob faithfully preached and encouraged the men in their path to recovery every week for over thirty years. Bob was also an active member of Salinas Valley Community Church.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Holly (Jason Avila) Barber and granddaughter, Alexa Avila of Prunedale; brother, Edward (Argie) Barber of Salinas; niece, Demetria (James) Crinion of Ohio and nephew, Ben (Lindsay) Barber of Sacramento and six great nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 11:00 am at Salinas Valley Community Church, 368 San Juan Grade Road, Salinas, CA. 93906.
