Obituary

Leroy (Roy) H. Miner of Salinas, California passed away peacefully at home, with his children at his side, on Saturday December 29th. He was born January 1, 1922 in Phillipsburg, Kansas to Clarence L. and Louise (Von Busch) Miner of Lincoln, Nebraska.

Roy spent his early years in Lincoln, Nebraska then moved with his family to Washington State. He graduated from Yakima High School, in Yakima, Washington and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Washington. He was preceded in his death by his wife of 51 years, Joan Sterrett Miner of Yakima, Washington. They moved to California in 1948 where they resided in El Cerrito, Fresno, and then Salinas since 1970.

Roy is survived by two daughters Sandy Dermer and Shari Wilcox, their husbands, Steve and Dwight of Fresno, one son Alan Miner of Vista, California; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Marshall and Mary Stiles both of Washington State. Roy also leaves behind his great, great friend, June Maitoza, and his faithful dog, “Poochie”. He was loved dearly and will be greatly missed by many. He will always be in our hearts!

Roy is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Salinas, the Eleventh Airborne Division Association, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and past member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and BPOE.

Roy served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a Lieutenant with the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment in the Philippines, Okinawa and Japan.

Roy worked as a Research Chemist with Niagara Chemical Division, FMC, Richmond California, then was part owner of Valley Agricultural Suppliers, Inc. of Fresno. Valley -Ag was then purchased by Union Carbide Corporation, as was Soilserv, Inc. of Salinas. With this merger, Roy was transferred to Soilserv, where he served as Technical Director until his retirement.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. and from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 2nd at Struve and Laporte Funeral Home. Graveside service will be Thursday, Jan. 3rd at 12:30 p.m. at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Salinas.

The family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society or Hospice of the Central Coast
