Obituary

Long time Salinas resident and former Salinas Mayor, Lawrence H. Struve died peacefully Sunday morning October 7, 2007 at the Mercy San Juan Hospital in Carmichael, CA following a brief illness. He was 93.

Larry was born on April 1, 1914, in Watsonville, California, and moved to Salinas in 1927. He graduated from Salinas High School in 1932, Salinas Junior College (Hartnell) 1934, and College of Mortuary Science in San Francisco, before returning to Salinas to work in the family business.

He married Alice Meckenstock of Carmel, California, in 1939, and they had three children, Karen, Jon and Jean.

Larry was active in the community and was a Charter Member and Past President of Salinas Host Lions Club, member and past Exalted Ruler of the BPO Elks Lodge, #614, Past President of the Salinas Toastmasters Club, Past President of the Salinas Valley Sporting Dogs Associations; Past President of Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce and named their Outstanding Citizen; member of the Salinas Masonic Lodge # 204, Scottish Rite Consistory No. 9 of San Jose, and Islam Temple of the Shrine, San Francisco.

He was elected to the Salinas City Council in 1957 and served as Mayor from 1963-1965. During that time, he and a delegation of other citizens representing Salinas made a trip to Salinas’ sister City, Cebu, in the Philippines.

Larry loved hunting and fishing and was an avid golfer enjoying many rounds at Corral de Tierra Country Club where he was a member for many years. He and his wife, Alice, traveled extensively and especially loved their frequent trips to Hawaii.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Alice, his son Jon, both in 1998, and his grandson Ryan Handley in 1994.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Karen and Wayne Handley of Groveland, Jean and Ron Metz of Folsom, brother John Struve of Salinas, his grandchildren Jayne (Mark) Lord of Pacific Grove, Kim (Dan) Feldhaus of Santa Barbara, Michelle (Carl) Angulo of Magalia, Chris Struve of Chico, Dustin Metz of Alameda, and Laura Metz of Santa Cruz, six great grandchildren, nephews Bob Struve of Salinas and Bill Struve of S. Lake Tahoe, and niece Janet Pampuro of Pacific Grove.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm in the Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 West San Luis Street, Salinas CA 93901

Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, October 11, 2007 at 2pm in the Struve and Laporte Chapel. Services officiated by Officers of the Salinas Elk’s Lodge # 614 and the Rev. Ken Feske

Entombment will be at the Garden of Memories Mausoleum in Salinas.

Family requests donations to be made to donor’s favorite charities.
