John Northam
formerly of Navarre, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, in Salinas, Calif. John was proud to have recently celebrated his 61st wedding anniversary and his 88th birthday.
Born Sept. 23, 1924, in Uhrichsville, Ohio, to James and Catherine (Jones) Northam, John graduated from Uhrichsville High School in 1942, and the American Institute of Baking in Chicago. He worked for Quimby Bakery of Uhrichsville for five years while in high school and prior to leaving for military service. Like his two older brothers, he served in World War II. Serving in Europe with the US Army from May 1943 to November 1945, he was part of the forces that liberated the Buchenwald concentration camp. As a Corporal with the 628th Medical Clearing Company, he earned an EAMET Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
On Sept. 1, 1951, he married Lucille Wilson with whom he raised their three children in Navarre, Ohio. He retired in 1990 as a supervisor of the bread department, from Nickles Bakery following 44 years of service and after earning numerous national baking awards. John was a member of Navarre VFW Post 5047, and had been very active in both the Navarre Lions Club and Fohl Memorial United Methodist Church until leaving Ohio in Dec. 2010.
Predeceased by his daughter, Vicki Lynn (Northam) McCleary; his parents; and brothers, Lloyd and Ralph Northam. He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife, Lucille (Wilson) Northam; his children, Jeff Northam (Carol Preston) and Patti Northam; his son-in-law, Tim McCleary; and his granddaughter, Jennica McCleary.
Calling hours are Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Navarre. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the funeral home with Pastor Dave West officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at East Union Lawn Cemetery. The family has suggested memorial contributions in John's name to Fohl Memorial United Methodist Church, 121 Basin Street NW, Navarre, OH 44662
