Loving Mother/Wife - Dedicated Runner/Tennis Player - Passionate Manager/Friend
Joan McNett Hackbert died peacefully at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital on December 22, 2017, with family and close friends by her side. Her passing came after a lengthy and courageous battle with a chronic illness.
“Joanie” was born on August 28, 1953, in Omak, WA, to John and Nancy McNett. She graduated from Santa Barbara High School before entering the restaurant management industry in Portland, OR. She moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 1984 and continued her employment in a number of restaurants including The East of Eden, The Penning Farthing, Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club and the Sand Bar & Grill. In 1986, Joan began an enduring working relationship with Chamisal Tennis & Fitness Club assisting in many capacities such as a fitness instructor, Director of Child-Care Services, Membership Services Coordinator and General Manager. In June, 2014, Joan ended her tenure at Chamisal after twenty-seven wonderful years of services to the Corral de Tierra community. She was for many of those years the heart and soul of the club. For Joan specifically and the Hackbert family, Chamisal has had a significant positive impact on our lives, our relationships and our well-being.
Joan met her husband, Richard, in 1985 at Chamisal. They were married at Church of the Good Shepherd on May 3, 1986. Outside of her career, Joan enjoyed running marathons, half-marathons and 10Ks; competing with the Chamisal Ladies interclub singles/doubles and USTA tennis teams; traveling across the US to visit historic sites, family and friends and attending concerts, venues and sporting events. Her community involvement included several years with Relay for Life, directing the Run in the Sun 10K running events at Chamisal and a fondness for dog-sitting.
Those who had the opportunity to meet Joan knew they had an immediate loyal friend, a compassionate concierge and an enthusiastic dance partner. The consummate jokester, she could bring laughter to any group with her one-liners, playful antics and dance routines. Her favorite moves were on the dance floor especially leading everyone in the Electric Slide. She was admired and loved deeply by her children, her family members and countless friends who will all miss her greatly.
Joan is survived by her husband of thirty-one years, Richard, and their children: daughter, Leigh of FT. Hood, TX, and son, John of San Francisco, CA; mother, Nancy McNett, Lompoc, CA; sisters, Michelle Segel of Bend, OR, Stephanie Johnstone (Doug) of Santa Barbara, CA, Nancy Moyer (Stephen) of Battleground, WA, Jean Hardy (Steve) of Orewa, Auckland, NZ, Ann Hall of Hollister, CA, and six nieces and nephews.
We would very much like to thank the professional medical staff and nurse assistants at SVMHS including Dr. Semers, Dr. Delgado, Dr. Carlson and Dr. Kaur. Their attention, care and compassion to Joan and her family was superb.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Chamisal Tennis & Fitness Club, 185 Robley Rd, Salinas, CA, on March 17, 2018 from 2-5 pm. Please RSVP to courtsidebistro@chamisal.com
