Javier (Javi) Ortiz, 46, born on December 30, 1973 in Salinas, passed away peacefully with his mother by his side on Friday, September 25, 2020.

Javi was a kind-hearted happy soul. He was born with Down’s Syndrome and the doctors gave him a life expectancy of no more than sixteen years. Fortunately, we had him with us for forty-six years. Javi lit up a room with his smile when he walked in. He loved going to parties and celebrations and eating a good cheeseburger. He enjoyed traveling to Mexico with his parents, where he celebrated each night with his aunts, uncles, and cousins dancing each night away.

He attended one of the first programs for Down’s Syndrome children at Saint George’s Church and graduated before moving on to the Social Vocational Services program where he learned many skills and was mainstreamed into the job society. He enjoyed going to the program that cared for him during the day and provided many social interactions throughout the years. He was also a participant of the Special Olympics in the past.

Javi’s passion was music. He loved all kinds of music, with Michael Jackson and Selena being his favorites. At Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital the wonderful nurses made sure he had his music and would dance around his bed with him. They were angels in disguise who provided him the best care.

It gives the family great comfort to know that Javi entered the heavenly gates with our father, Jesus Ortiz, who passed a few days before him. The two were inseparable and were best buddies and are now together as special angels.
Javi is survived by his mother, Beatriz Ortiz, his sisters Beatriz Smith (Les) and Julia Duran (Manuel), his brother Jesus, and his nephews Mario Banuelos (Carrissa) and Manuel Duran, and his nieces Monica Banuelos and Mariah Smith, and his great niece, Mia Rose Banuelos.
