Howard Jones, a resident of Salinas, CA, passed away on November 17, 2018 at the age of 89. Born in Fruitland, Idaho, he settled permanently in Salinas California after completing college at the University of Boulder Colorado. He earned his Master’s degree at San Jose State. He served during the Korean War in the US Army. Howard retired as an administrator and school teacher from the Salinas City School District where he had a positive impact on many young lives starting their journey in the world.
Howard’s greatest passion throughout his entire life was music and everything surrounding it. Handy with his hands, he owned a business and repaired all classes of musical instruments for the local school districts in Salinas and the Monterey County Symphony for over three decades. An accomplished musician, he played the Baritone and Euphonium in the Pacific Brass and Watsonville Community Bands, traveling throughout the United States and also overseas. His favorite skill was singing, he was the song leader at church and also a member of multiple choirs throughout his life. He was a long-time member of the Senior Singers. He was frequently referred to as Mr. Music.
In his retirement years, Howard was an active member of the Active Senior’s, Inc. where he was President for 2 years, 2011-2012 and remained active with the group until his death. He also took up Rosemaling (decorative folk art) and painted Christmas ornaments, plates and other gifts.
Howard is survived by Shirley, his wife of 30 years; his two sons, David (Melinda) and Brad; two grandchildren, LT Scott Jones and LT Katherine Smith (Devereux) both serving in the US Navy; great granddaughter, Elisabeth Smith; and brother-in-law Larry Hill. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Lois Jones and his sister Linda Hill.
He lovingly embraced his step children, Warren and David Clark who preceded him in death. He is also survived by step daughter, Carolyn Putman (Bernie); granddaughters, Stephanie Wurster (Nicholas), Amber Clark (Steve Vaughn); great granddaughters, Alyssa and Hailey Vaughn.
We thank his many doctors who cared for him these past 3 years and his loving caregiver Debbie Garcia.
A man of faith, Howard is still with us, he is just singing in a different place.
