Obituary

Gerda Bartlett passed away peacefully Tuesday July 4th, 2017 in Salinas. Gerda was born April 8, 1929 to Wilhelm and Erna Fink in Berlin, Germany.
She emigrated from post-war Germany to the Salinas Valley where she spent her first months atop Fremont Peak, baking bread for Rollin Reeves’ 12,000 acre cattle ranch, now known as the Gabilan Ranch.
She married Alex Bartlett in Salinas on July 5th, 1952 and became a housewife by choice. Alex worked for PG&E and they remained in Salinas all their lives. They visited Germany several times together, but were most thrilled with their cruises to Alaska.
Gerda loved classical music, symphonic and opera especially, attended many a Monterey Symphony concert and was a member of the First Methodist Church Choir where she sang for many years. A devoted mother and grandmother, generous and kind-hearted to all who knew her, she is survived by her only son Michael Bartlett and her granddaughter Erika Vandegrift-Hall. She was preceded in death by her husband Alex Bartlett, her daughter Barbara (Vandegrift), and her brother Hans in Germany.
She will be missed by her many devoted friends, four-footed and two. She was a volunteer at the SPCA Benefit Shop in Salinas and later assisted at the SPCA Wildlife and Rehabilitation Center off Highway 68. She remained a life-long advocate for abused animals.
We would like to thank the many caring doctors and nurses for helping mom through her passing, with a special thanks to Peggy Taber, Ingrid Willsie, Timothy Earp, Ginger Bassett, Dawn Horder, Rene Berndt and Eric Hall.

A Service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on July 15, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church, 404 Lincoln Avenue, Salinas, CA. 93901.

Burial will be held Monday, 11:00a.m. July 17, 2017 at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas, CA. 93907.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the SPCA Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center of Monterey County. 831-373-2631 info@spcamc.org
