Obituary

George Masker, 88, died peacefully on August 9, 2014, at his care home in Carmel. He was a native of Somerville, New Jersey, and lived in Salinas for 42 years.

He served in the Navy during World War II, working as a journalist for Navy base newspapers in the Pacific and California, including Monterey. But his true calling was in education. He earned a BA in Elementary Education from Kenyon College (Ohio) in 1946 and an MA in School Administration from Teachers' College at San Francisco State University in 1961. He taught at American schools in Okinawa and Europe. And from 1971 until his retirement in 1985, he was coordinator for the Cooperative Program in the Monterey County Office of Education.

George was a dedicated bridge player, participating in local clubs wherever he lived around the world. He is a Silver Life Master, and was director of his own game in Salinas for over 30 years, starting in his own home and later moving to St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He was most proud, however, of his role as host father for numerous foreign exchange students. After the death of his beloved wife, Rosemary, he began hosting international students and greatly enjoyed taking them on trips and teaching them how to cook. George was also very involved in the Episcopal Church in Salinas, first at St. George's and then for 30 years at St. Paul's. He served on the Vestry and always had a warm greeting for newcomers and visitors.

He is survived by four nephews: Charles Hendrix of Stillwater, Oklahoma; James and John Scott Masker of Connecticut; and Robert Masker of New Jersey.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 6th, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1071 Pajaro Street in Salinas, CA, 93901.
A reception with light refreshments will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1071 Pajaro Street, Salinas, CA 93901.
