Esther C. Johnson (ne. Quimby, 1920-2018) was born and raised in the small farming community of Hughson, California. In childhood and early adolescence she had health issues which persisted throughout her life, but of which few knew because of her indomitable will. She attended Modesto Junior College where she met Glyn, her husband and friend of seventy-three years. (He proudly spoke of her as “that cute blond from Hughson.)” In 1940 she transferred from Modesto Junior College to San Jose State, earning a degree in Elementary Education. Upon graduation in 1942, she immediately married Glyn, only then to follow him to Texas, Nebraska and Utah before he piloted a B24 to the European Theater. (He flew 32 missions over Europe.) In the fall of 1945, they moved to Salinas, where in 1946 she gave birth to Rick and in 1949 to Stan. In 1952 in earnest she began teaching first and second graders, even as she increasingly became involved in the music ministries of the First Presbyterian Church of Salinas. Eventually she conducted and/or oversaw these varied music ministries, doing so for eighteen years. Thereafter she helped organize and lead women's Bible study groups within the church. Vivacious and direct, a world traveler with a great sympathetic ear, she will be missed by many, certainly by family and friends whose lives she deeply enriched.
She is survived by her sons, their wives and their children and grandchildren. Often she spoke of her desire to meet her Lord; she has now done so in a new and glorious way.
