Emilio Rossi, beloved husband, Dad, Papa, and Nonno passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on May 10, 2018. He was born on June 20, 1921 to Nicola and Concetta Rossi in Piane Crati, Italy. At a young age, he apprenticed with his older brother, Angelo, learning masonry, a trade that would become his lifelong passion. He told stories of walking 8 miles uphill to work and back again after a 10 hour day. He was a brilliant man who could troubleshoot and solve any issue that he encountered, making him one of the best in his field.
At the age of 21, he was recruited into the Italian army. He served on the Russian front and was wounded, but miraculously survived and returned home to his childhood sweetheart, Rosetta. They were married on April 13, 1947, and traveled to America in October 1948, with their 6-month-old son, Antonio, in search of a better life for his family. He proudly earned his American citizenship and Salinas became his home.
Even though his first years here were a struggle, he worked hard, learned the language, learned to like the food, and earned his contractor’s license. In 1954, Rossi Masonry was established and became one of the most successful masonry companies in the area.
Emilio was a charter member of the Salinas Sons of Italy and held several local and State offices and was honored as Man of the Year several times. He was involved in the Italian Catholic Federation, Knights of Columbus, Elk’s Lodge, Salinas Valley Builders Exchange where he earned the title of Construction Man of the Year in 2000. He was honored by the Italian Heritage Society for his contributions to the Italian community.
He loved hunting, gardening, making olives, wine, sausage and capicola, picking wild mushrooms, cutting wood and canning tomato sauce. He was an avid Palma sports fan and loved the Warriors. But most of all, he loved spending time with his family, and the cabin he built in Arroyo Seco.
Emilio is survived by his wife of 71 years, Rosa “Rosetta.” He is also survived by his children, Tony (Susie), Connie (Danny), Frank (Carmen), Robert (Paula), Jimmy (Margie) and Barbara (Gus). He truly loved and cherished his 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren and they will continue to treasure the memories they have shared with him.
