Born in Lake Andes, South Dakota
Resided in Salinas, California
Betty was born on Tuesday, September 15th, 1936 in Lake Andes, SD to parents Earl and Marion Kneebone. She was a life-long educator and loved teaching both children and adults. After years in both the public and private education systems, Betty started her private tutoring business, which she greatly enjoyed, especially teaching people to read. She volunteered at Salinas libraries teaching Spanish speaking adults English. She loved music and had a beautiful soprano voice, singing and directing choirs throughout her life. She had a major in English, a minor in Spanish and went back to school at 48 years old to receive a masters in Special Education, graduating at the top of her class at Chapman College. She fiercely loved her family and was always available for whatever was needed with love and encouragement. She met her beloved husband Earl at Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD and they were married June 7, 1958. They moved to Colorado Springs, CO right after marriage, where son Daniel was born (1960), and daughter Laura (1963). They then moved to Reno, NV where Earl had been relocated by his employer, Speidel Publishing, relocating to Salinas, CA in 1965 where their third child, Marcia (1970) was born. In the mid-seventies, Earl and Betty purchased the Western Bible Store which they put their hearts into for 30 years. Betty was a vivacious, driven, tireless woman who made daily lists of things to do up until just a few years ago. Her wonderful husband, best friend and life soulmate, Earl, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2005 and became a resident a month ago of the same care center his beloved Betty was for a brief time. They were married 60 years.
She is survived by her husband Earl, their son, Daniel (Manteca, CA) daughter, Laura (Spokane, WA) and daughter, Marcia (Chris), Sacramento, CA. Grandchildren: John Castro (Washington State), Adrianna Castro (Salinas) and Cheyenne Castro (Sacramento). Great Grandchildren: Kyleigh Jim (AZ), Hayden Castro (Sacramento) and Ben Castro (Salinas). She is also survived by her brothers, Ted Kneebone (Aberdeen, SD) and Bob Kneebone (Seal Beach, CA), along with numerous nieces, nephews and their families in the Midwest and California.
A very special and heartfelt acknowledgment goes to our beloved Adrianna for her tireless, loyal and wonderful care she gave to both her Grandparents for 4 1/2 years in the home. Adrianna gave entirely of herself with selfless love to make sure her grandparents were safe, comfortable and happy, which they were because of our Adri. The family will always be grateful for her wonderful gift of love.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be held Saturday, May 5th, 2018, 1:00 p.m. at Lincoln Ave. Presbyterian Church, 536 Lincoln Ave., in Salinas, CA. 93901 where Earl and Betty had been members.
