Ed was born December 19, 1915 in Chicago, IL. He graduated from Chicago’s DePaul University in 1937. In 1940, he married Frances Dorothy Sturm, brought his bride on a honeymoon trip to the Salinas Valley, and began his career in the produce industry with the A & P Company. He joined the Lewis Tervin Company in 1946. After several years, he and 6 other employees purchased the company, and renamed the firm Merit Packing Company. After 40 years in the produce business, he sold the company and retired in 1979.

Ed was a Navy WWII veteran. His memberships included Sacred Heart Parish, Knights of Columbus, Salinas Golf & CC, Western Growers’ Association, including service as president, and the Illinois High School Basketball Hall of Fame. Ed’s faith in God, love of daily Mass, and devotion to his family were the cornerstones of his life. He will always be remembered for his quick wit, the twinkle in his eye, and his insatiable interest in his family and the Salinas Valley Produce Industry.
