Doyle Blake Burnett passed away November 30th at home, surrounded by family. He was born in England, Ark. Jan. 3, 1928. He came to Salinas in 1940 and attended Washington Jr. high and Salinas H.S., and he was all-league and captain of the football, and basketball teams, and lettered in tennis. He attended Hartnell College and was the first captain of the football team. He attended San Jose State on a football scholarship. He started on the football team until injured. He served in 8th Army Hdgts. in Japan, and starred on the football team, playing in two bowl games.
He worked in produce for the next 57 years, except for four years when he became a Real Estate Broker. He worked the last 25 years as G. Mgr. of Central Coast Cooling, which grew from 6 to 100 employees. He enjoyed all sports including hunting, fishing, and most of all, people. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 7895, a member of American Legion Post 589, a past member of Salinas Valley Golf course, the Elks, and Moose Lodge. He had a lifetime pass to Hartnell games for meritorious service.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine Hartzog Burnett, his second wife, Sandra Jones Burnett, and his son William Wayne Burnett.
He is survived by his sister, Billie Kubota, his brother, Bud Burnett, his son, Ronald Burnett, daughters, Bonnie Holzwart, Pamela Knisley, thirteen grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren. He also left behind a special nephew and buddy, Gary Renneberg, and two of the greatest friends a man could have, Gamaliel Diaz and Francisco Lopez. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by many.
