Born in Salinas, California
Resided in Salinas, California
Educated entirely by the Salinas school district, she attended Lincoln Elementary, Washington Jr. High, and Salinas High School before attending St. Mary’s College of Nursing, where she earned her degree. After college she practiced at both Memorial and Natividad hospitals.
Upon marrying her high school sweetheart, Michael Lerda, the two quickly began a family that included five children. They resided in Salinas throughout their lives, and in 2019 they celebrated an incredible 70 years of marriage. The two of them cherished many close friendships that lasted more than eighty years. She participated in many local organizations, serving on the boards of the Camp Fire Girls and the Steinbeck House, and was a member of Entre Nous, Chamisal Tennis Club, and the Salinas Golf and Country Club.
An enthusiastic and competitive athlete, she regularly won local tennis events, often participating in both singles and doubles. As time went on she transitioned to golf, which became her favorite sport. She scored three holes-in-one over her many years on the links. She and her beloved Mike played golf wherever they traveled, including many trips to the Palm Desert area, and trips to Hawaii.
She was preceded in death by her dear husband Michael Lerda, and her son David Lerda.
She leaves behind her devoted and loving daughters, Kathy (Lerda) Peele (Ken), Laurie Lerda-Plog, (Chuck), Leslie Lerda, and Julie (Lerda) Robertson, (Jeff). She was graced by eight grandsons whom she adored, Michael Leach, (Amber), Nicolas Peele, Christopher Caudill, (Tiffany), Ryan Caudill, (fiancée Hillary Peckos), Brett Robertson, (Valerie), Matthew Robertson, (Kristin), Alex Lerda-Plog, (Britta), and Andrew Lerda-Plog, as well as three great-grandsons, Aiden Leach, Jaxxon Peele, Sawyer Caudill, and her recently-born great-granddaughter Maven Lerda-Plog. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and extended family members from both the Ottone and Lerda lineages.
A gathering of immediate family members will occur in early October to honor her incredible lifetime.
