It is with great sadness that the family of Doris Riese McFarland announces her passing at 7:10 p.m. on Friday, August 10, 2018, at her residence in Salinas, CA.
She was born Doris Mae Riese on July 25, 1926 at St. Francis Hospital, San Francisco, CA to her father, Wallis Richard Riese and mother Mabel Elvina Twede. She had one sibling, Wallis Richard Riese, Jr. and was the granddaughter of German composers, musicians, and piano makers; as well as Norwegian ministers and sea captains.
Known as Dorie to friends and family, she was raised on scenic Red Hill in San Anselmo, CA and graduated from Tamalpais High School in 1943. She played the flute in the school orchestra and was a member of the honor society. She studied piano after school at the Dominican Convent with Sister Dorothy. As a teenager, Dorie worked as a counselor and swimming instructor at youth summer camps.
She graduated from Mills College, Oakland, CA in 1948 with a major in Music Education. While at Mills she studied under French composer Darius Milhaud, and won an intercollegiate prize for musical composition. Dorie was swept off her feet by returning WWII Army veteran, Myron Boyd McFarland, Jr., Forestry major at neighboring U.C. Berkeley. Myron and Dorie were married on June 26, 1948 in Marin County, CA and raised a family of five children together in Myron’s hometown of McFarland, CA. She was a member of the McFarland Women’s Club, Bridge Club, was a Camp Fire Girl leader, and served as a substitute teacher in local schools. In 1974 Myron and Dorie relocated to Monterey, CA.
Throughout her life, Dorie continued to pursue her musical interests as a piano teacher, McFarland Methodist church choir leader, church organist, and as a member of community choral groups in Bakersfield and Carmel. Dorie was a lifelong learner through the Gentrain Society at Monterey Peninsula College. Dorie had grown up loving the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, camping, and fishing with her family.
She is survived by her five children and their spouses; James (Sandra) McFarland, McFarland, CA; Donald (Yoshiko) McFarland, Seattle, WA; Douglas (Lisa) McFarland, Salinas, CA; Laurie (Don) Jackson, Riverbank, CA; Brian (Kathy) McFarland, Tehachapi, CA; along with 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 18, 2018 at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 9101 Kern Canyon Rd, Bakersfield, CA 93306 .
Memorial gifts may be made in her name to the Monterey Peninsula College Foundation.
