Carl died peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at the age of 91. Carl was born in King City on Nov. 30, 1914 to Emil and Aina Reich owners of the Reich Hotel. In his youth, spent in King City, Jolon, and Salinas, Carl was an avid member of the Boy Scouts, 4-H, a horseman, and athlete. A 1932 graduate of Salinas High School, Carl remained close friends to many teachers and classmates. Carl earned a BA from UC Berkeley in 1937 and a Masters in Latin American History in 1938. At Berkeley he met Clare Ackley his much-loved wife. Clare preceded Carl in death in 1989. Carl served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Okinawa. Returning to Salinas, Carl established a produce company farming lettuce and strawberries. From 1963 until his retirement in 1980, Carl taught Computer Science at MPC. Carl had a vivid green thumb growing much-admired roses and begonias and often shared flowers and fruit with friends. An enthusiast of Monterey County history, Carl loved to recall events from the recent past and long ago. His daughter Karen Dellabarca; three sons, Tom, Doug, and Ted Reich; and his in-laws: Salvi Dellabarca, Brigitte, Ellen, and Wendy Reich survive Carl. Carl is also survived by his nephew, Rudy Reich and his family, and ten grandchildren: Casey (and his wife De Anna), Thor Dellabarca, Adrian (and his wife Danielle), Matthieu, Margot, Corey, Clare Marie, Chris, Kyle, and Kevin Reich and one great-grand child Calissa Dellabarca.
A visitation at Struve and Laporte will be held Thursday, Dec. 15, 7 to 9 PM. A private service will be held on Friday followed by a celebration of Carl’s life at a time and place to be announced. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Monterey County Historical Society, Dorothy’s Place Operation Fund (Franciscan Workers, POB 2027, Salinas, 93902), or the UC Berkeley Bancroft Library Fund (UCB, Library Development Office, 131 Doe Library, Berkeley, CA 94720)
