He was honored to serve in the Army for 33 years and retired out of Fort Ord in 1980 with the rank of Master Sargent. During his time in the service, he Co-Founded the Fort Ord Fogbusters Motorcycle Club that chartered in 1972 and ended in 1993 with the closing of Fort Ord. After his retirement from the Army he was very active in the American Legion and served as Service Officer for 30 years for Post 589, after it’s closure he joined Post 694 as a member. Smitty loved being on the open road with his loving wife by his side, riding his motorcycle, camping, traveling, playing tennis, handball and dancing. He never met a stranger because he never was one to others. He loved his family and his two sweet family dogs Girly Girl and Happy.
He is survived by his wife Molly, his daughter, Beatrice Jansen, her husband Steve, Grandchildren Kaleb Jansen(whom shares his birthday);15 and Gavin Jansen; 11.
Services will be held on Friday July 6, 2018 at Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis Street, Salinas, CA. 93901. beginning at 11:30 a.m., Motorcycle procession to graveside ceremony at California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery, 2900 Parker Flats Road, Seaside, CA. 93955 to follow, with Celebration of Life to be held at American Legion Post 694, 694 Legion Way, Marina, California 93933 at 3:00pm. Family requests that all who attend bring side dishes, salads, and desserts to share. Cards for family will be gratefully accepted.
