Barbara spent her formative years in Fresno, graduating from Fresno High School in 1957. She lived and worked in Fresno, San Francisco, San Jose, and Salinas, CA. in 1966, Salinas became her home after her marriage to James D. Schwefel, Jr. Their family, most importantly their parents and their beautiful little daughters, were the focus of her younger years as well as becoming an active part of the local community of Salinas.
In the 1980s, Barbara rejoined the workforce working for investment, architecture and lighting design firms as well as the Monterey Institute of International Studies. She most notably enjoyed working at Las Palmas Ranch during its early development phase and at the Monterey Herald. Later she relished volunteering as a docent for the Pt. Sur Lighthouse and as a Beach COMBERS volunteer for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years who she met on a blind date, her two daughters Susan Schwefel and Sara Barouty, Sara’s husband Daniel and her three grandchildren Katherine, Alexandra, and Elizabeth Barouty. Her brother Richard Diebert predeceased her in June 2006.
Barbara wanted to specifically express the following upon her passing: “I say to my dancing partner Jim, our daughters Susan and Sara and their families, my deceased brother Dick’s family - Alyson and Jorge, Eric and my wonderful friends; you have been the sparkling treasures of my romp and adventure through this life. I love and appreciate each one of you. My time here has been so much more than I ever dreamed possible, so be joyous, releasing your sadness in time and know I am with you always on the cool breeze and in the warm sunshine of the garden of memories we created together.”
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Barbara’s life to be held on March 9, 2018, 5:30 pm at Corral de Tierra Country Club. RSVPs are appreciated.
