Alice Louise Macartney-Cerney-McKenzie
February 9, 1929 to October 25, 2018
Our mother, Alice McKenzie, passed this week after a brief illness. She would have turned 90 this February, 2019. She was a resident at Brookdale Care Facility in Salinas where she was provided excellent care by the staff. She enjoyed craft projects, good music and sing-a- longs. She was able to have her beloved dog “Sparky” with her for several years. Frequent visits by the Visiting Nurses Association were an added comfort to her care. We want to give a special thanks to her friend at Brookdale, Charlene Carpino-Monta, who became like family to us when we visited our mom.
Alice was born to George and Genevieve Macartney in the original Salinas Hospital, formerly located on Monterey Street. She attended Roosevelt Grammar School, Salinas High School and Hartnell College. She received her AA degree from Hartnell College, majoring in journalism.
Alice gave birth to five boys and worked part and full time in various jobs, while raising a large family. She was married to Frank Cerney for 25 years. During this period she owned and operated the Salinas Letter Shop, she worked at the Salinas Credit Union and Monterey County Court House.
She was also a PTA President at Sacred Heart School and occasionally a substitute teacher there.
Her second husband was Bob McKenzie, whom she was married for 25 years. Bob had six children whom the two spent a good deal of time with during the holidays. In fact, she cooked wonderful holiday meals with the house full of her and Bob’s kids. During this period she worked at D’Arrigo Brothers and the Pajaro Valley School District where she retired. She and Bob enjoyed golf and lots of travel, particularly to the east coast where Bob grew up. They lived in Salinas, Watsonville, Aptos, Garberville and Sequim, Washington. Alice loved to go antiquing and in particular enjoyed collecting antique jewelry. She and Bob were avid swimmers, both in the ocean and the local YMCA.
Alice is survived by her four sons and their spouses, David & Susan Cerney, Mark Cerney, John Cerney and Philip & Maureen Cerney, all living in Monterey County. She is also survived by her 7 grandchildren, Mark Cerney, Shane Cerney, Sarah Cerney, Benjamin Cerney, Christopher Cerney, Brian Cerney, Mike Cerney and one great grandchild, Mark and Allanna’s son, Dominic Cerney. And lastly, Alice’s dear sister and her spouse, Joan and Armando Levy of South San Francisco.
Per Alice's request, there will be no formal services.
