Obituary

Alan ‘Yogi’ Raymond Leighton, 59, passed away peacefully at Sacramento Mercy General on Sunday morning July 30, 2017. Surrounded and supported by family and people he loved, Alan fought a short but courageous battle to survive the aftermath of a massive heart attack. Born in Dachau, West Germany on February 28, 1958. Alan was the eldest of Esther Dewar and Henry Alexander Leighton’s four children. Esther passed when Alan was 11 and in 1970 Col. Leighton M.D. married Helga, “Ellen”, making Alan the eldest of six. He graduated from Seaside High School in 1976 and joined the Marines. In the USMC he served with distinction professionally in the field of demolitions and athletically on the field as a goalie for the USMC Soccer Team. In 1990 he married Lisa Yates of Winder, Georgia, together they had two beautiful boys, Randolph (24, Chico, CA) and Alan Jr. (19, Winder, GA). They divorced in 2006.

Alan was a true patriot. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He was an extremely caring, loyal and dedicated son, brother, husband, father and friend. Alan was always willing to lend a helping hand; he loved people. His passions were Harley Davidsons, USMC, soccer, Taekwondo, friends and family. Alan, competing against men half his age, placed 1st and 2nd in his Division of the Regional Taekwondo tournament. As a volunteer, he started the first competitive U12-U15 Boys Soccer Team in Barrow County, Georgia. He also formed the first chapter of “Wingman” MC in Barrow County, GA and continued to support and develop other chapters throughout the South. He moved back to California in 2011. In Paynes Creek he began growing award-winning medicinal marijuana. Alan was living his dream and enjoying the things that made him happy.

He is survived by his two sons, Randy and Alan Jr. Leighton; his siblings, Henry “Hal” (Madeleine) Leighton, Michael Ballinger, John (Carol) Leighton, Tammy Ballinger, Marni Leighton (Scott) Violini; nieces, Simone Leighton and Emily Violini; nephews, Ossian, Hugo, Wil, and Hugh Leighton; his name sake Uncle Alan “Bus” Leighton; and his cousin Cheryl Leighton (Rick) Knowlton. His loving parents, Henry and Ellen Leighton, predeceased him.

Alan was taken from us too soon. We will all miss him immensely.

Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday August 5, 2017 at 3:00 pm at the Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis Street, Salinas, CA 93901.
