July 29, 1939 - February 7, 2019
Born in California
Resided in Monterey, California
He was a hard worker, often 2 or more jobs at a time and widely varied - often in a managerial capacity. He was a real “people person” and loved to talk. His most favorite job was caddying at Pebble Beach, most of the time walking, often double bags, and sometimes two rounds in a day. “Hawk” could spot your ball further than anyone else in his day and did it for over 20+ years - that’s a lot of Crosby’s! Loving the game of golf, he was good enough to almost go Pro when he was 20 years old. He also loved Taxi Cab driving - proud of Monterey where he was born and raised and knew like the back of his hand, he never wanted to live anywhere else. Al had 6 brothers and the Kirby Boys have a long and rich history on the Monterey Peninsula.
For the last five years, Dad had an angel named Vicki, his champion and care manager at Elder Focus, LLC. She insured that he always had the best care and continued his care Pro Bono when he ran out of finances. She said they never give up on a client!
Al is survived by four of his brothers; Bob, Jim, Don and Richard Kirby - predeceased by Joseph and Charles. Also his son Stephen (Laura) Kirby and daughter Shari (John) Dinkel as well as his two grandchildren Ermalyn and JD.
He didn’t want any fuss or services and said to spread his ashes on any green, the 5th hole at Pebble if we could “swing it”.
Donations in his memory can be made to The First Tee so that lots of kids can be introduced to the game he loved; www.thefirstteemontereycounty.org
You can also honor Al’s memory by giving a generous tip at your first opportunity to anyone in the service industry and tell them “this one’s from Hawk”.
We would love to hear any thoughts or stories if you care to share.
